For the serious or seriously interested woodworker, this class will guide the student through the process of creating a small bench using traditional Japanese woodworking techniques. From learning how to properly sharpen any blade and creating a silky smooth beautifully planed wood surface, to cutting and building a footstool or end-table.
Beginning with the 3-hour blade sharpening class on Thursday evening, this class will take the participant through flattening the back of the blade, fitting, and adjusting for the perfect plane. Students will then spend the weekend learning about basic design considerations, orienting with the wood grain, cutting wedged mortise and tenons, wedging, assembling and finishing in the making of their very own handmade stool.
Materials fee covers the purchase of a new 1000-6000 grit combination Japanese water stone, Japanese block plane (2 wide, 6 long with 1 3/8 steel blade), replaceable-blade 210mm Japanese pull saw, and wood. Students are also asked to bring a hammer, square, and pencil and a 12mm (1/2) chisel, though with advance notice the instructor will provide Japanese chisels for $42.
Class is appropriate for beginning through experienced wood workers.
Yann Giguere has extensive training and experience working with wood. Since 1991 he has been using Japanese hand tools. He has completed a 3 year study & training program in Western cabinet and furniture making at M.U.M. University in Fairfield, Iowa. Upon completing his training in Iowa, Giguere designed and constructed a Japanese timber frame structure in New England. Inspired by the use of Japanese hand tools during the construction of this project, Giguere decided to begin an apprenticeship in Japanese woodworking, mentored by Dale Brotherton, head of Tokumi Compay. In 2008, Giguere completed his 9-year Japanese Carpentry and Woodworking Apprenticeship. Giguere moved to southwestern Virginia in 2008 and established MOKUCHI, a studio providing fine custom woodworking in the Japanese tradition.
